Epworth Sleepiness Scale for Children and Adolescents (ESS-CHAD)
Epworth Sleepiness Scale for Children and Adolescents (ESS-CHAD)
The ESS-CHAD was developed from the adult Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to evaluate daytime sleepiness in children and adolescents.1,2
Modifications to the ESS were made to incorporate age-appropriate language and ensure that questions reflect activities in which children and adolescents are more likely to participate.1,2
The ESS-CHAD is given as an example by the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, third edition, text revision (ICSD-3-TR) for subjective quantification of severity of daytime sleepiness in pediatric patients.3 It is validated in children and adolescents with narcolepsy with cataplexy aged 7 to 16 years.2
Each item is rated from 0 to 3 based on likelihood of falling asleep. All numbers are added together for a total score, with a higher score reflecting a greater amount of daytime sleepiness.1
